ABOUT
Matthew Ellis (vocals/guitar) initially started off as a solo acoustic act. It was never that he didn't want to be in a full band, but rather that he was never able to put one together. So, in the meantime, he calmed down his guitar riffs and pulled his voice down a few decibels to a biting scratch and catered himself to the coffee shop crowd.
But eventually Matt started collaborating with friend Cody Birse (guitar/vocals) and eventually they were able to bring together Mike Ibsen (bass) and Sam Schaefer (drums) to form the beginnings of The Deepest Ocean in September of 2010.
However, this initial form of the band would not last long as, first, Sam would have to move back to Germany and then, as the musical direction of the band moved forward, Mike would step down due to a musical difference.
Cody and Matt initially thought that the band was done, until long time friend Taylor McAlpine (drums) stepped in, followed shortly by Paul Stalder on bass. The line-up was set. The band was in motion and took off like a shot, playing shows at venues all over the city.
The band recently released their new EP trials in November with a sold out release party in Calgary on February 2nd, 2013 and are now beginning to work on a follow up EP or single.
