LONDON’S GREATEST SHOWBAND WANTS YOU!
I came up with an idea to make friends, socialize and have fun thru the performance ‘arts’.
Those being live music, singing, dance, theatrics and comedy.
Many years ago I performed and toured in rock bands across ON/PQ. As the years pass, life evolved, friends and loves have come and gone. Over the last few years I got into stage acting and musicals and love it. What’s your story? Maybe you played in bands, maybe you never had the chance and are a house player. Maybe you sing or dance. Maybe you are more theatrical or comic. Some will and do have greater talents then others.
I imagined this idea where people would gather, maybe once a week or more? My idea of this concept is to put together maybe a few ‘super’ live shows per year, or maybe many. It will develop very organically. This band of people would be larger than a regular 3-4 piece group you might see at a bar or club.
People would naturally come and go so part of the idea of forming a large group is that we will never rely too much on any one person as so typically happens in bands. I see a communal, organic form of creativity and friendship. Having several drummers, guitarists and singers is all well and good. Those who contribute will perform, it’s that simple. The objective is to offer everyone the chance to contribute to the project. I’m not trying to assemble world class talents but anyone with particular talents and gifts will be able to shine throughout.
Ultimately I envision a big ‘20’ piece style orchestra with multi-instrumentalists complete with horns, strings, m/f back up singers and actors/dancers. Imagine something like Paul Schaffer's Late Night Band on steroids. Instead of just learning songs we would create ‘multi-visual Vegas/Broadway’ style shows with lights, sound, imagery, staged acting, choreography, costume changes, etc. But not just ‘one’ show.
We will have multi different shows we could pull out depending on what we want to do. The idea is to have fun. This is not a huge for profit venture though we will ultimately earn some money and be able to offset expenses too. The reality is that we live in London and there’s only so many near by places and opportunities to perform. This is about adults with regular jobs who want to spend some of their free time in a very exciting, artistic and social way involved in a great creative outlet.
I think it would be great to perform an annual charity event and have all kinds of opportunities to cross network. I believe if I can assemble a good group of people and do this right we will be able to perform on some of London's biggest stages and events. Corporate events would be possible too. Does that sound cool?
Some examples but not limited to a full set or more from the ‘Motown’ era or ‘Disco’, or complete albums sides/tributes from the greatest classics depending on the talents we have like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles etc. Or the idea of incorporating scenes of ‘live theatre/dance/acting/costuming’ like ‘Jersey Boys’ or ‘Saturday Night Fever’.
There are so many ‘epic’ classic songs from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to ‘Bye Bye American Pie’ to Simon and G’s ‘The Boxer’ or ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Lights’ or Bruce’s ‘Born to Run’ or Bowie’s ‘Young Americans’ or we could write ‘The History of Rock’ with music and story from the past decades to present. I almost hate to mention ANY songs because there are thousands to consider.
Imagine performing the complete ‘Rocky Horror Picture’ soundtrack and show at midnight Halloween or Micheal’s ‘Thriller’ with costumes/theatrics. Whatever the ‘set’ or ‘show’ it would be a complete a concept as possible in look, sound and feel.
‘London’s Greatest Showband’ Presents ‘The Motown and Disco Years’ or ‘Saturday Night Feeeever’ or ‘The 80’s Replayed’ or ‘The Annual Halloween Monster Mash Bash Featuring Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack’. These are just some thoughts and ideas I have.
Another of the possibilities might be to have a 'stable' of 'Featured Lead Performers'. Imagine 5 or 10 or 20 or whatever the number of people who are able to transform into famous/infamous artists past or present. From Elvis to Bono to Micheal, maybe you do a wicked Janis Joplin look and sound. Maybe you're Beyonce or Shakira, maybe you do Tina Turner or Madonna, Hendrix or Morrison. We could go on forever. Maybe as a FeatLead you might not want to be a permanent part of the ensemble but would relish in performing at least some time throughout the year. Imagine being part of a show made in London where a steady diet of some of the world's greatest entertainers trot out to do their mini set, one after another with a 'Big' back up band. AWESOME!
We just need some fun easy going men and women who would love to artistically socialize with the end goal of performing ‘live’ and living a little. I promise this will be a lot of fun and lead to new friendships. Several friends have stated interest so I’m hoping to start very soon in 2010 and let the seed grow by word of mouth. If you know someone who might love this idea pass it on. Cheers…….Nick hotcoolnick@ 519-670-9069
