In 2007 two very talented song writers and musicians came together at the home of a friend (Jonas Claesson), ostensibly to play The Blues. Feeling cheated by the lack of vocals, Colin Braithwaite a member in the group, bumped it up a notch. The group rehearsed in a bedroom at Colin's home where his wife urged Don Rigden who had originally told her that he simply could not sing, to give it a try. “I was sitting at the dining table one lazy Sunday afternoon when I heard this deep growl and could not believe the tone and quality emmanating from the space above. I ran upstairs. Ok guys who was just voicing ? She found out that it was Don and smiled knowingly.”
A few months later Des Braithwaite was suitably impressed with the sounds coming from the basement to where the group had now progressed.Yeah I know the Blues began with 'jammin' she said, but its' time for you guys to get out of this basement !” The group still tried to interject, but she put her foot down on the devils' head and went ahead, booking a gig. Now they had to deliver and it was time to find a name. For many months Des had seen a logo in her mind with the intials CAB (her husbands intials) and thinking of their home city .. finally she had it .. The Calgary BluesHounds were born !
on the invite of close friends Troy Kokol and Joni De Laurier (Juno Award Winners) an open mic was attended The World Famous Sandy Band (the Host at the event held in The Dog & Duck Public House off of McLeod Trail in Calgary) invited the group to Feature as a Showcase Band on 19 July 2008 playing their first “real” gig to great success. Unfortunately the sad part was that, although Sandy had wanted the group to feature again, she passed away and never even had the opportunity to see her choice realised. Recently just close to the one year anniversary of their Featured Showcase playing, the band played again at the Dog & Duck to celebrate, thinking very warmly about Sandy. Her son still hosts the event along with the support of his father.
